Routine Maintenance
Each type of blind or shade has specific care requirements that are included with your product literature. This is a general guide for maintaining common styles of blinds, shutters and shades. Where instructions differ, you should follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your particular product.
Dusting
Frequent dusting will keep your window coverings looking their best. Many blinds, shades and shutters can be dusted either with a clean feather duster or a vacuum attachment set on a low-suction curtain setting. Compressed air (available in computer supply centers) and hair dryers on a non-heat setting may also be used to blow off dust and dirt from window coverings. Special dusters made for the purpose are also a good choice for dusting horizontal blinds.
Spot Cleaning
To remove spots and marks, moisten a soft, clean cloth or sponge with water and a mild detergent if needed. Blot gently to avoid creasing or damaging the material.
Static Removal
You can help remove static between vinyl and metal vertical blinds by applying a very thin film of detergent or fabric softener to them. Metal and vinyl slats may also be rubbed with fabric softener sheets to eliminate static.
Washing
Some honeycomb, vinyl and aluminum blinds may be tub washed in warm water and mild detergent. Although some blinds are designed to withstand full immersion, it is generally best not to immerse the headrails. Check manufacturer’s directions before immersing your window coverings.
